The 4th Uganda-Kenya Coast Tourism Conference: A Journey of Partnership and Innovation

The Indian Ocean breeze carried more than just the scent of salt and sun, it carried the spirit of collaboration, innovation, and unity that defined the 4th Uganda–Kenya Coast Tourism Conference, held at Ocean Beach Resort Hotel and SPA in Malindi, Kilifi County.

This year’s conference brought together over 130 Ugandan delegates and a diverse group of Kenyan tourism stakeholders, all converging to explore ways of strengthening cross-border tourism ties and promoting sustainable growth across East Africa.

Representing Ronick Tours and Travel, our CEO Derick Remember was among the Ugandan delegates privileged to attend this inspiring and transformative event.

The Journey to the Coast

Reflecting on the journey, Derick recalls how the trip itself embodied the essence of partnership and discovery.

“We started our journey from Lugogo, Kampala, aboard comfortable coaches that took us through the border into Kenya. The energy was contagious, everyone was excited, curious, and ready to learn,” he shares.

After a brief stopover in Nakuru, the delegation boarded the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train to Mombasa. What could have been a long ride turned into a lively experience filled with laughter, games, and networking.

“That six-hour train ride was symbolic, it reminded us that tourism isn’t just about destinations, but about the connections we make along the way,” Derick adds.

A Warm Coastal Welcome

Upon arrival in Mombasa, the Ugandan delegation was warmly received by the Uganda Consulate, led by Ambassador Paul Mukumbya, and treated to a delicious lunch at The Swahili Pot, a perfect introduction to Kenya’s rich cultural and culinary traditions.

Delegates were then divided into groups and sent to different coastal counties for a five-day familiarization tour. Derick joined the team exploring Kwale County, where they stayed at the Diani Sea Resort.

“Diani was breathtaking, the beaches, the people, the resorts, everything was vibrant and welcoming,” Derrick notes. “We visited numerous facilities and attractions, learning how Kenya’s coast is positioning itself as a top global destination. There’s so much Uganda can learn and collaborate on.”

Conference Highlights: Youth, Innovation, and Technology

Themed “Leveraging Youth, Innovation, and Technology for Responsive and Inclusive Tourism,” the conference focused on how modern technology and youth-driven ideas can redefine tourism in the region.

“What stood out for me was how Kenya has embraced digital innovation, from online destination marketing to eco-smart hotels,” Derick explains. “As Ronick Tours and Travel, we’re inspired to integrate more technology into our operations, to connect better with modern travelers.”

Panel discussions, exhibitions, and networking sessions provided a platform for Uganda and Kenya to share experiences, build partnerships, and explore ways to co-create smart, sustainable tourism destinations.

A Growing Partnership

The conference concluded on a high note with the announcement that next year’s edition will be hosted in Uganda, marking a milestone in the ever-strengthening tourism partnership between the two nations.

“This is a proud moment for us,” Derick says. “Uganda will have the chance to showcase its beauty and hospitality to our Kenyan counterparts. The partnerships we’ve built here will continue to flourish.”

Reflections and Gratitude

As the Ugandan delegation returned home, there was a shared sense of fulfillment and inspiration. Derick expressed his appreciation to all those who made the conference possible:

“We’re deeply grateful to the Governor of Kilifi County, the Uganda Consulate in Mombasa, and Ambassador Paul Mukumbya for their outstanding support,” he said. “This conference reminded us that East Africa’s tourism potential is strongest when we move together.”

The 4th Uganda–Kenya Coast Tourism Conference was not just an event, it was a journey of learning, connection, and innovation. For Derick and Ronick Tours and Travel, it reaffirmed a commitment to championing regional tourism and embracing new ideas that make travel more inclusive, sustainable, and exciting.

“We came back to Uganda not just with memories,” Derick concludes, “but with new partnerships, inspiration, and a renewed drive to showcase the magic of our region to the world.”
